An advertisement is an announcement in the media to publicize a product or an activity. The common modes of advertising are in a newspaper, a magazine, a catalogue, on the radio, on a TV channel or on the Internet in a suitable form. Well, the advertisements are also displayed on a huge boards (hoardings) on the roadside in public places. Nowadays, on the mobile phones too one may receive advertising messages in text, audio and video formats.
The main purpose of an advertisement is to inform the public about a product or an acivity. The company benefits when more people are aware of their new product, as more people buy their products. Further, the company that makes the product clarifies some points and highlights important points about the product. Without an advertisement, the consumers are unaware of the products, so the company has no consumers. The main advantage is to enter the market and to increase the clientele.
The advantage of an advertisement, from the point of view of people, is that they come to know some information about products. So the public can compare and choose the product of their use and liking.
A major disadvantage of the advertisements is that often companies boast a lot about their products. The wordings and phrases in the advertisements are quite misleading. Many of the visuals are based on girls, romance and sex. They do not point out the disadvantages of the products.
So the people can get trapped by the beauty and charm of the advertisement and buy the products. Children are attracted to the products by the charm in the advertisements. Often parents have tough time to convince their children. Also, people may become addicted to feel like buying and consuming products, even though they may not really need them. Harmful products are sold through good advertisements.
